The protection of the child comes first

This makes discovering, researching and learning to control the body through natural conditions extremely difficult – and this does not only apply to the city. In the countryside, too, unsupervised romping is usually prevented by parents. The danger from traffic plays less of a role here than fear of accidents, for example on streams and rivers, as well as fear of sexual harassment. For safety reasons, unsupervised play is hardly possible any more and many parents feel compelled by the external circumstances to plan their children’s activities so that they can even get around with others. The symptoms of stress then express themselves in the physical complaints described and in the form of hectic pace, disorientation, exhaustion or social withdrawal, explains Dr. Leonhard Thun-Hohenstein, senior physician for child and adolescent psychiatry at the Christian Doppler Clinic in Salzburg. Excessive commitment and a tendency towards perfectionism are typical of a burnout personality. In many cases, the foundation for this attitude is laid in childhood. Parents should therefore also make sure that the pressure does not become too great for their children.

Recognize time robbers

The child’s energy sometimes seems inexhaustible. You want to know everything, try everything and the day would need at least twice as many hours. But the parental responsibility is to find out what really interests the child. What he enjoys and what could possibly become his hobby. Not every boy is interested in football and not every girl is interested in ballet. Not even if the parents would like that. Forced events of this kind can quickly become time robbers that prevent exactly what is actually supposed to be achieved: relaxing from everyday life.

Enjoy free time together

It is better to pick out one or two things that the child has a lot of fun with and do the rest of the week at their own discretion. This creates the opportunity to concentrate on the essentials. How constant stress affects the body

The three phases of burnout

The expert describes three typical phases in which burnout develops: commitment, adaptation and frustration. People at risk of burnout often work unsolicited overtime, consider themselves indispensable and believe that they do not have enough time. An adjustment phase follows in which problems and conflicts are suppressed and increasingly frustrated withdrawals. In this phase, those affected appear apathetic, lose joy in their tasks and feel inner emptiness. This eventually culminates in severe depression and exhaustion of the body, mind and emotions.

Perfectionists are particularly at risk

«» Burn-out always has internal and external factors, «explains Tomaschek-Habrina. People who tend towards perfectionism and cannot say no are particularly at risk. Circumstances that favor burnout are high stress, a lack of recognition or little opportunity to participate in the workplace.

Frustration phase or dangerous burn-out?

Temporary phases of weakness and reluctance are not a burn-out syndrome. Professor Joachim Bauer, doctor and psychotherapist at the Freiburg University Medical Center, names three typical characteristics: firstly, those affected feel long-term exhaustion, secondly, they no longer see any point in their work and thirdly, they develop an inner dislike or cynical attitude towards customers or clients. «These three characteristics have to come together, then we speak of a burn-out syndrome,» explains Bauer.
